The Inkey List - Snow Mushroom - First Impressions

 I cannot stand product pilling!
You think you have a lovely skincare routine all lined up - it's going beautifully - you're all soft-skinned and glowy and looking forward to finishing off with a gorgeous facial oil - and then suddenly - it's all ruined by the facial oil pilling on your skin and everything feels all bitty and undone!

It's taken me several months, but I think I have uncovered the mystery of why some facial oils pill in my skincare routine.

I think the culprit is Hyaluronic Acid!
Again, not all products including Hyaluronic Acid, but some - there doesn't seem to be any more rhyme or reason to it than that!

So, what to do? Products containing HA are an absolutely vital skincare step for me personally. I need that extra layer of deep hydration that HA affords. And facial oils are also an essential step in my routine - I can't imagine not including a gorgeous oil every morning and/or evening. But - I really cannot abide that feeling you get from product pilling and would rather leave out the HA step.

I think I may have discovered an alternative - I can still get my hydration and enjoy facial oils in my routine without them pilling.

The Inkey List - Snow Mushroom
£9.99 for 30ml.

I first encountered the use of Snow Mushroom (Tremella Fuciformis) in skincare via the Pure Savvy brand. Pure Savvy use Snow Mushroom in their Eye to Eye Serum and also in their Come Hell or High Water Micellar Water.
I was instantly smitten and seriously impressed by the hydrating qualities of these products - you absolutely cannot beat Eye to Eye for under eye hydration.
You can read my reviews of Come Hell or High Water* here and the Eye to Eye Serum* here (*PR Samples).

After reading up about Snow Mushroom, I was mightily impressed by it's powers!
Snow Mushroom acts in the same way as Hyaluronic Acid, which can hold up to 1000 times its weight in water, but Snow Mushrooms particles are even smaller than HA, so it can penetrate the skin easier.

So when I saw that The Inkey List offered a Snow Mushroom hydrator, I leaped at the chance to buy it and try it out.

Claims
The INKEY List Snow Mushroom is a super hydrating, lightweight jelly moisturiser, that helps to soothe, calm and reduce the appearance of redness while providing an instant cooling effect.

Ingredients
Aqua (Water/ Eau), Butylene Glycol, Glycerin, Sodium Acrylates Copolymer, Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Caproyl Prolinate, Lecithin,Tremella Fuciformis (Mushroom) Extract, Carbomer, Madecassoside, Sodium Hydroxide, Ethylhexylglycerin, Glyceryl Polyacrylate, Trisodium Ethylenediamine Disuccinate.

First Impressions
A light gel texture with no discernible scent. Apply before using your preferred serums in your Am and/or Pm routines.

The Snow Mushroom serum is less runny than the hyaluronic acids that I've used, so to me, it already feels more substantial on my skin. However, despite it's slightly firmer texture, it feels like it absorbs into my skin so much better. In fact, it absorbs completely - there is absolutely no tacky residue after using the Snow Mushroom serum which is something that I've noticed happens after using most products which contain HA.
My skin just feels totally hydrated and very at ease and ready to receive any other serums or treatments in my routine.

It's an incredibly soothing and cooling sensation on application, which makes it the ideal serum if your skin is feeling sensitive or out of sorts.

But the best thing? No pilling when following up with facial oils. I even used my most 'difficult' facial oil that I've found incredibly hard to fit into routines due to it's propensity to pill and was delighted to find out that it applied beautifully without any pilling whatsoever. Result!!

Finding The Inkey List Snow Mushroom has been a real skincare epiphany. I'm absolutely delighted with how quickly and easily it's slotted into my skincare routine. I'm loving these initial results. But moreover, I feel so happy that I may have finally solved that perennial riddle of product pilling!

  2. inkey list retinol with vitamin C, benzoyl peroxide, and AHA/BHA acids. AHA and BHA acids are exfoliating, which can dry out skin and cause further irritation if your skincare routine already includes retinol. As for benzoyl peroxide and retinol, they cancel each other out.
