The Best of 2019 ~ Skincare

2019 was a year of discovery for me. Most of the products I bought, used and loved the most were from some of the UK's best natural skincare brands.
And the UK really does have such an amazing nationwide tribe of Indie skincare brands who are showing the bigger brands exactly how it should be done!
Ingredient and production transparency, ethical commitment to fair trade, recyclable packaging, reducing the carbon footprint, cruelty free, small batch, personalised customer service - these are the qualities that are most important for me when choosing products and I think all the brands mentioned in this post deliver all of these qualities as well as exceptional products.

Viva Indie Skincare!

Best Brands of 2019

I have tried so many products from so many fantastic British Indie Skincare brands this year and it really was difficult to judge one above another. The brands I've chosen this year are brands where I have either tried their entire range or several products from their range and loved every single product.
I feel that the brands I've chosen offer a great range of products that are a joy to use, show great results and are good value for money. I also feel that they offer products that do things a little differently from the norm - innovation and uniqueness keeps the skincare market exciting!

Lime & Lilac*

First, a disclaimer: I am a brand ambassador for Lime & Lilac and I received the entire range of products for reviewing purposes. BUT, the reason I wanted to be a brand ambassador is exactly because Lime & Lilac is one of my favourite brands. I had previously tried most of the range and fallen head over heels for them. The ingredients are top quality and well chosen; they all rate highly on the 'Joy Scale' and they consistently produce great results for my skin.
Just don't make me pick a favourite from this capsule range! I couldn't actually be without any of them.
What I love most about the Lime & Lilac range is that the products all feel so incredibly luxurious and top of the range, but thankfully, the prices are reasonable, especially when you take into account the quality of the ingredients used and the superior packaging.
Read my review of the Light Facial Oil, Capri Body Oil and Passionflower Cleansing Oil for a more in-depth look at these stunning products.

Nudge Boutique*

I had the fortune to try the entire Nudge Boutique range at the end of 2018.
The small capsule collection of just three products have been consistent favourites of mine this year.
The magic ingredient which makes these products so fabulous? Norfolk Saffron!
Saffron threads are used in both the Saffron Glow Facial Oil Serum and Saffron Petals are used in the Saffron Glow Cleansing Clay Masque.
With the recent introduction to the range of Shampoo Tablets (see review here) Nudge Boutique have rightly commanded the position of favourite brand. Owner Jo Klassen's personal touch with customer care and personalised advice has been so helpful and informative and she illustrates exactly what it is about Indie skincare brands that make them my first choice when buying the products on my shelf.
Nudge Boutique is another brand who offers a really luxuriant range of products, full of top quality and well-selected ingredients and all with the most delicious scents you could wish for.
Read my reviews of Nudge Boutique products HERE.

Meadow Skincare

One of my favourite discoveries of the year with products that I want to keep in my routine forever!
Meadow Skincare offer a fabulous organic, vegan, waterless capsule range.
What I love mostly about this brand is that they take everyday skincare staples that perform in a uniquely different way.
Meadow Skincare utilise the best in organic botanical ingredients (mostly locally-sourced) with some of my own personal favourites that I love to find in my products such as Yarrow, Tomato Seed Oil, Colloidal Oatmeal and Broccoli Seed Oil.
I highly recommend their starter box which is great value with good sample sizes so you can get a real free for the brand - which won't take long till you fall in love with every single product - believe me!
Read my brand review here.

Pure Savvy*

Back in May I was blown away after trying out the entire range from Pure Savvy.
A no-nonsense, effective and streamlined skincare range designed for people who are strapped for time and don't want to be fussed with a long skincare routine.
Pure Savvy was the brand who introduced me to perhaps the most ingenious ingredient that I've ever encountered - Tremella Fuciformis - Snow Mushroom. Snow Mushroom is a natural alternative to Hyaluronic Acid but has much smaller particles than HA so penetrates the skin more easily. Read my review of Close of Play - an overnight radiance serum with a beautiful silky texture like no other overnight treatment I've ever tried.
Just a Minute is the most effective flash mask I've ever tried. There's no faffing about with this one! You only need just one minute once a week to reap the brightening benefits from this beauty.  Power Surge Instant Skin Boost Facial Oil really shook up my approach to using oils, I could use this earlier in my routine which really boosted the benefits of follow-up products. Eye to Eye is an eye serum which I've been using for most of the last six months, soothing and cooling my area and an intense hydration which keeps those fine lines at bay. Multi-Tasker is a fabulous multi-use beauty balm which I've used with great success from head to toe. And finally, Come Hell or High Water is a Micellar Water containing Snow Mushroom which was great as a morning cleanser, a makeup remover and as a facial mist.

Ishtar Skinlights

Ishtar Skinlights have been a favourite of mine for a good couple of years now. I'm always so impressed by their large range of 'active' products which are rooted in nature but backed up by science.
Ishtar Skinlights are at the forefront when bringing active ingredients to the skincare loving public. They were the first brand to introduce Mandelic Acid products to the UK.  I've always seen really great results from all of their products that I've tried.
The Bioactive 2.5% Retinol Serum is my go-to choice and I've been through several bottles. For an everyday brightening treatment containing Vitamin C with added P3 Peptide, SOD (Superoxide Dismutase) and Silver Vine extract, the Perfect & Glow Serum brings radiance, smooths skin and offers protection against pollution and other environmental skin stressors. I love their cleansing products too. The Cleansing Mousse with Organic White Tea is the only foaming second cleanser I'd use as it's so incredibly gentle (like washing your face in fluffy clouds) and absolutely non-drying. The Clay to Milk Cleansing Powder is also one of my favourites. Offering an incredibly gentle exfoliating cleanse, this clay cleanser also softens, calms and soothes skin and I find it great for regulating sebum levels.
They offer a range of moisturisers too. I'm currently using the Time Code Anti-Aging Moisturiser which contains elasticity-boosting Copper PCA with Ectoin to deliver a Copper Optimised Dermal Extremolyte (C.O.D.E.).
Extremolytes are unique molecules that stabilise biologic structures such as membranes.
This rich but non-greasy cream has a light blue tint and it pairs really well with the Retinol Serum. Review will follow in the new year.

First Cleanser

Lime & Lilac Passionflower Cleansing Oil*

I cannot think of enough superlatives to praise this stunning cleansing oil in a way that it truly deserves!
The first step in my routine is my favourite and nothing ticks all the boxes as much as the Passionflower Cleansing Oil. It scores a solid ten on the 'Joy Scale' with its absolutely dreamy Neroli and Green Mandarin scent and gorgeous silky slip.
But what really pushes this head and shoulders above all others is the way it emulsifies. When water is added the oil turns into a silky, milky lotion-like texture and rinses away so easily, taking with it every last scrap of daily grime, SPF and makeup - including stubborn and heavy mascara.

Last Year's Winner was: A. Florence Skincare - Balm to Milk Cleanser

Second Cleanser

Indie Lee - Rosehip Cleanser

Although I have flitted around a bit this year with my second cleansers, the Indie Lee Rosehip Cleanser has been the only one that I've repurchased a second time.
This has everything I'm looking for in a second cleanser - a low ph, a gel texture, no foam, heavenly scent, non-drying, non-irritating and super effective. It's a tad on the pricey side for me, but I'm more than happy to buy the smaller 30ml travel size.

Last Year's Winner was: Espa - Optimal Skin ProCleanser

Toner

The Body Shop Toners

Another category where I've been a bit of a flitter. I like different toners for different jobs - light, hydrating, neutral toners, clarifying, astringent toners all the way to acid/glycolic toners.
I've chosen the entire range of The Body Shop toners again this year as there is a toner to suit all skin types and all requirements in their range. I think my favourite is the Seaweed Toner for it's lightly astringent clarifying properties. But a shout out also to the Vitamin E toner for being so incredibly hydrating.

Last Year's Choice was: The Body Shop Toners

Treatments

I've chosen the three 'treatments' that I use daily - a Capillaries Serum, a Vitamin C Serum and a Retinol Serum.

Dr Bielenda - Capillaries Serum

This is an outstanding serum that I have used consistently every morning for almost two years now. It's main aim is to reduce the visibility of broken capillaries but it also is great for brightening skin, clearing skin and reducing redness. Amazing value too - less than a fiver for 30ml. The ingredients in this little concoction are outstanding and include Lactobionic Acid, Troxerutin, Chestnut, Vitamin C and D-Panthenol.

Ishtar Skinlights - Bioactive Retinol Serum 2.5%

There is understandably some nervousness about deciding to start using a Retinol serum when you hear so much about the dreaded 'Retinol Flake' and tales of people having to go through a transitional period as their skin adjusts to using such a potent active. However, I've never experienced a single bit of irritation, flaking or dryness when using Ishtar Skinlights Retinol. I started on the Bioactive 1% Retinol Serum and after that first bottle went on to use the Bioactive 2.5%  Retinol Serum, which I've used daily ever since.
The results are great (after consistent longer-term use), the serum plays brilliantly with other products and layers well and it's a great price.
I have found my holy grail retinol product in this serum and now there's no looking back.

GOW - Vitamin C 23% & Ferulic Acid

There are so many great Vitamin C serums available but I've found my go-to! The Garden of Wisdom for Victoria Health Vitamin C 23% & Ferulic Acid serum has been my constant companion in 2019 and I've used it daily all year, either in my morning or evening skincare routines. Effective, great value, non-irritating - consistent use of this yields some excellent visible results. My skin is bright, clear and with a radiant glow that I was always aiming for.
It's no surprise that this has been Victoria Health's best selling product in both 2018 and 2019.

Last Year's Winner was: ValJean Labs - Restore Serum (Niacinamide & Zinc)

Serums

I've tried a lot of serums this year and I've been particularly drawn to those with products where the ingredients are high in antioxidants.
It's been difficult to whittle this category down to just a couple of favourites as there hasn't been a single serum that I've tried and haven't loved!

Nudge Boutique - Saffron Glow*

Saffron is the superstar ingredient in this little powerhouse of an oil-based facial serum.
This is the serum I turn to when I want to get my glow on! It's perfect in my morning routine, either on its own or a couple of drops mixed in with my moisturiser as a booster.
Scented with Lemon, Sweet Orange and Neroli, Saffron Glow is rich in carotenoids to help brighten skin and even the skin tone. It's also available in 'unscented' too.

The Spoiled Bee - Fruit Enzyme Serum*

The fruit enzyme serum is packed with AHAs, vitamins, antioxidants and essential fatty acids to refresh and regenerate your complexion.
The naturally exfoliating fruit enzymes will gentle brighten and clear your skin at the same time as deeply nourishing and feeding it.
This serum is absolutely jam-packed with exotic super fruits including Pomegranate, Starfruit, Kiwi, Passionfruit and Mangosteen and has the most delicious scent of Cherry Bakewell (from the plum kernel oil).
This is an ideal choice for me and my skin as I prefer  more gentle and natural exfoliating products.

Last Year's Winner was: Dr Medica - Capillaries Serum (Top in this year's 'treatment' category)

Facial Oils

My favourite category and the one where I find it hardest to choose just one favourite!
Last year I was facing an overwhelming moisturiser stash but this year has definitely been the year for collecting facial oils!
Facial Oils always take the longest to use up so I'm always on the look out for brands who offer 'try me' or travel sizes.
When I first started using facial oils I admittedly held the assumption that one facial oil was pretty similar to another. I soon found out that was wrong! Every oil I've tried this year has had it's own unique character and I will reach into my collection to pick out a specific oil depending on what my skin needs on any given day.
It's been particularly hard to choose just one facial oil as I haven't met one that I didn't like yet!
I've chosen my winner on its ability to deliver a facial oil experience in a unique way.

Lime & Lilac -Light Facial Oil*

This was last year's winner and it holds the top spot again this year.
As previously mentioned, I did become a brand ambassador for Lime & Lilac this year but that has no bearing on me choosing the Light Facial Oil as my favourite of the year again this year.
This is such an easy and enjoyable oil to use - it has a light and dry oil texture so applies well and absorbs easily. It's also an oil that I can use in both my morning and evening routines and suits and helps my skin throughout every season of the year. It's the most versatile oil that I've ever tried. And not forgetting it's delicious scent of Neroli and Frankincense - I could quite happily wear this as my everyday perfume!
It's thanks to this beautiful oil that I no longer suffer with irritated winter skin as it keeps my skin nourished throughout the harshest of weather and protects it against environmental stressors.
A must-have in my skincare routine.

Mask

Again, a very difficult category to whittle down to just a couple of favourites. I've realised that as much as I do love a good clay mask, I'm preferring ready-made masks. The two masks I've chosen both deliver fantastic results in an extraordinary way!

Meadow Skincare - Calm & Soothe Face Mask

The Calm & Soothe Face Mask is jam packed with some absolutely stellar botanical ingredients including Babassu oil, broccoli oil, hemp oil, elderberry oil and blue yarrow essential oil. This balm-textured mask is an absolute miracle worker. The super soothing mask promotes skin healing and helps to banish blemishes, redness and skin irritation. The blend of oils and clay also helps to tighten pores and firm skin. I like to leave it on for at least 30 minutes (no drying, dripping or cracking!) but you can also use it as a spot treatment overnight.
Read my review here.

Pure Savvy - Just a Minute*

2019 was the year when I was introduced to the concept of 'flash making'.
Previously, most masks I tried (with the exception of clay masks) were all about a long and drawn-out pampering time for me so it took me a little bit of time to get my head around the flash mask. I'll be honest, I just couldn't understand how my skin could reap the benefits when leaving a product on my skin for such a short amount of time.
But then enter 'Just a Minute' and I got it in a flash!
Utilising fruit enzymes and botanical extracts, Just a Minute manages to visibly brighten my skin and leave it with such an incredible healthy radiant glow even when left for for just a couple of minutes (yes, I had to push it just that little bit longer!). I usually use this as I'm getting ready for a shower and the results are outstanding!
This product has totally changed the way I view masking this year.

Last Year's Winner was: Darphin - Vetiver Aromatic Care Stress Relief Detox Oil Mask

Exfoliation

I've always favoured enzyme exfoliation over the more traditional physical exfoliators as I suffer from broken capillaries and don't want to exacerbate them by over-exfoliating. But this year I discovered a couple of physical exfoliating products that meant I could enjoy a good manual exfoliation without damaging or disrupting my skin's barrier.

Meadow Skincare - Gently Resurfacing Facial Exfoliant

If you have sensitive skin or your skin can't handle a coarse manual exfoliation, then this is the ideal exfoliator for you. The magic ingredient in this product is both the apricot and hibiscus powders which gently but effectively exfoliate and brighten skin without irritation.
Skin is left soft, smooth, clear and pores are visibly reduced after using.
An absolutely remarkable formulation and yet again, Meadow Skincare have produced a rather unique way of delivering a standard skincare essential.

Bumi Naturals - Face Polish

I'll be honest, I was initially very sceptical about this face polish as it felt a tad on the coarse and scratchy side to me when I first sampled the texture.
But I am so very glad that I didn't dismiss it out of hand without trying it on my face as I would never have had one of those 'aaahhh! I see!' moments!
Yes, the fine bamboo and volcanic ash give this face polish a gritty physical texture but then the hemp oil and shea butter base perfectly evens it out so you have the best of both worlds - a physical exfoliator with a super soothing and soft oil base which protects and cocoons your skin.
I love using this face polish once a week as I feel it gives me a very satisfying exfoliation that doesn't irritate my skin or leave it feeling red and sensitive - and usually you don't get both in one product!

Multi-Tasking Balms

A new entry category for my picks of the year this year as I come to appreciate the pure joy of the multi-tasking balm. Any previous notions about balms for dry patches, cuticles and dry hair ends have been banished as more and more inventive uses for a good balm come into play.

Lucky Cloud - Hydrating Super Balm

I can often be found just sitting and sniffing this little pot of gorgeousness in a blissed-out trance of ecstasy at the sheer scrumptious-ness of it's scent! Sweet Orange Oil is one of my favourite scents in a product, so this balm had me at hello!
But add in Apricot Kernel Oil, Vitamin E, Shea and Cocoa Butter and Calendula Oil and you have the perfect silky soft balm texture to match the delicious scent.
The list of uses for the Hydrating Super Balm is endless - itchy scalp relief; after sun treatment; first cleanser; sore nose soother; under eye night treatment; lash treatment; nail and cuticle treatment; post shave balm - and of course for all and any dry and irritated skin patches.
A must-have all year round!

Natural Wisdom Spa - Blue Tranquility Balm

Without doubt, this is my favourite coloured product ever!
And if that's not enough of a reason to choose an item as a favourite, then I have a list as long as my arm for all the other reasons why this is my favourite balm.
The superstar ingredient in the balm is undoubtedly Blue Tansy. This hugely expensive essential oil is also one of the most soothing and restorative oils in the natural world.
It's one of my favourite skincare ingredients as I know that it will deliver instant soothing and healing and longer-term skin repair.
Full review to follow shortly.

Dames & Dimes - Sunset Glow Recovery Balm

Another balm choice where the colour puts it at the top of my favourites list!
But just look at that stunning orange colour - and it's all natural!
It's the Sea Buckthorn CO2 extract and Carrot Root Extract which gives this balm its sunset glow. These two super ingredients are also responsible for encouraging tissue regeneration, nourishing dry skin and are potent antioxidants to target the signs of ageing.
Scented with beautifully refreshing lime and tangerine essential oils, every aspect of this balm gives it a top mark rating on the 'Joy Scale'.
I only bought this balm during the latter part of the year but it very quickly became an all-time favourite and a product that I'll know will always have a place in my skincare collection.

Moisturisers

My moisturising game has changed quite dramatically this year as I have found myself getting my moisturising needs met mostly by facial oils and oil-based balms.
That's not to say that I've eliminated the more traditional moisturising creams from my routines, but they do seem to have taken a bit of a back seat. I'm still favouring water drop style moisturisers for the warmer months and adding boosters to my day moisturisers in the colder months.
Here are a couple of moisturisers that I've loved using in 2019.

Omoi Denmark - Plump it Up Face Cream

I may have veered away from the more conventional moisturisers this year, but this is a face cream that I could never tire of.
I've loved every item I've tried from Omoi Denmark but my favourite product is their 'Plump it Up' face cream.
Perfectly named, as this face cream is one of the most nourishing and hydrating skin-plumping creams I've ever tried. It's uber rich and decadent but it absorbs beautifully and leaves my skin so well fed and super soft.
I like to use this alongside the Omoi Q10 + E Facial Oil for a luxurious and rewarding end to my evening skincare routine.
Read a review here.

Meadow Skincare - Hydration Boost Moisturising Face Balm

I've mentioned how I've switched to less conventional means of moisturisers in 2019 and the Meadow Skincare Moisturising Balm is the best explanation I can give as to why I've changed my habits.
I've been loving the oil-based balm texture, particularly during the colder months when my skin needs a little something extra to stave away dry and irritated winter skin.
This superfood balm offers a multitude of uses and can be used from top to toe - hair, body, feet, nails - anywhere that needs a little extra TLC.
But I've mostly been using it as a last step moisturiser in my evening routine. Despite its oil base, I can quite happily use this on top of a facial oil without feeling too laden with oils. In fact, I feel that it really seals in all of the products used prior to the balm and I always wake up with calm, soft and plump skin every morning.
The added bonus is that I only need to use the tiniest of scoops, so this is incredibly good value for money as it lasts so long.

Eye Care

I totally revamped my eye care routine this year. Eye creams were out of favour and serums and balms became my preferred products.

Alexa Sky Botanicals - Alpine Cellular Complex Eye Balm

If I could choose just one skincare 'Eureka!' moment for the year, then it would have to be after discovering the Alexa Sky Botanicals Alpine Cellular Complex Eye Balm.
This absolutely changed the way I approached my eye care routine and also changed the delicate and ageing skin around my eyes for the better.
Despite nearing fifty years of age, I'm still quite lucky in that I only have fine lines (albeit lots of them) rather than any deep lines around my eyes (puffiness and tiredness is a different matter though!). But these fine lines can cause real trouble when wearing makeup as any attempt to conceal them can often make them look worse if powders or concealers cake around the under eye area.
Dabbing just the tiniest amount of the eye balm under my eyes every morning works wonders for making my eyes look less tired and puffy and also hydrates the area well enough to plump up the fine lines and smoothing them out considerably. Light reflecting particles also brighten up the area and make any dark circles significantly diminished.
This is my hero product for my eyes and I was incredibly grateful to be able to call an end to the long-running search for 'the one'!

Pure Savvy - Eye to Eye Serum*

Yet another Pure Savvy product to make the list and another Holy Grail product for me.
Wearing the Eye to Eye serum is equivalent to walking around all day with the most soothing and cooling eye mask!
The inclusion of my beloved Snow Mushroom in the ingredients gives this eye serum its intensely hydrating properties. I wear this every morning, together with the Alexa Sky Botanicals Eye Balm (see above) and this duo of eye care products have made so much difference to my eye area.
I was quite surprised at just how dehydrated my under eye area must have been - but the difference after using Eye to Eye is remarkable. My thirsty under eye area just drinks this serum up! Non-sticky, quick to absorb and intensely hydrating, cooling and soothing, I can't see myself being without this serum in my skincare routines.

Last Year's Winner was: La Roche-Posay - Redermic R for Eyes

Night Treatments

This year I have been introduced to some great night treatments that show that overnight products don't always have to come in the form of an overly rich and heavy cream!

Pure Savvy - Close of Play Overnight Radiance Serum*

Yet another Pure Savvy product to hit the charts!
I've tried various overnight treatments that promise to deliver gentle exfoliation and brightening as I sleep but none of them really hit the mark until I tried 'Close of Play'.
The first thing to surprise and thrill is the texture of the serum. It's a beautifully lightweight silky serum which absorbs quickly and easily into the skin.
There's some fantastic botanical ingredients involved. Willow Bark Extract is rich in antioxidants and balances, exfoliates and tones skin as you sleep. It's also great at reducing redness. Papaya Fruit Extract is one of my favourite natural enzyme exfoliators and always gives really great glow! Spilanthes Acmella is a plant-derived extract which firms, smooths and restructures skin and is responsible for a noticeably tighter skin with smoother complexion upon waking.

Bumi - Night Repair *

I was delighted when Imogen contacted me several months ago asking if I'd like to try a couple of Bumi products. Yes please! I was instantly drawn to the Night Repair - mainly for the inclusion of one particular ingredient which I personally feel is woefully under-appreciated. Broccoli Seed Oil is one of my absolute favourite natural ingredients and Night Repair utilises its fabulousity with incredible results.
Broccoli Seed Oil, along with Cucumber Seed Oil is packed full of vitamins and minerals and also have powerful antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and emollient properties.
Night Repair is an absolute joy to use and even more of a joy when you see it's restorative results in the morning. Perhaps one of my most favourite products from the whole of 2019.

Beauty Subscription Box

There's nothing quite like receiving a monthly beauty box to lift the spirits!
But I'm torn between that gorgeous anticipation of receiving new products through the post and feeling overwhelmed by the amount of products in my stash.
I've tried to keep my Beauty Box habit in check this year but I do subscribe monthly to the Love Lula Box and bi-monthly to Skin Organics Clean Beauty and also buy the occasional box from Latest in Beauty and Naturisimo.

Skin Organics Clean Beauty Box

For the second year running, my favourite Beauty Subscription box is undoubtedly the Skin Organics Clean Beauty Box. It consistently introduces me to fabulous new-to-me natural beauty brands and pretty often includes a product that has been on my wish-list. Some of my favourite products and brands have been as a result of receiving them in this box (as can be witnessed in my 'Monthly Favourites' posts).
See my unboxing for the most recent box here.
