Anti-Haul ~ Primers & Setting Sprays
I'm going to try something new this year - a look at what I DON'T need to be buying!
If you've stuck with me so far, you'll know how I'm always whinging about how many products I have hoarded in my stash that took a hot minute to buy but f-o-r-e-v-e-r to use up! I'll be addressing which areas of my stash are most congested with products that I don't need any more of, or may not even use at all.
And then the plan is to try and use them up without buying any more!
I'm starting this month with primers and setting sprays.
When I first started to really get into buying makeup products (excessively) I just assumed that a primer was a must-have. The reality for me is that I hardly ever use them.
Yes, if you find a good one then it can really help with how your foundation wears, but my argument is, isn't it better to find a foundation that doesn't rely on a primer to make it work?
Also, I don't mind a long and involved layered skincare routine, but I also make sure that it works well as a base for makeup - for me personally, adding another layer of primer before foundation often feels like one layer too many.
So let's look at my current stash:
Most of these weren't actual purchases - they either came in various beauty subscription boxes or as part of a set. I did buy the E.L.F Setting Spray. It's not a huge amount, and they're mostly deluxe sample sized, but it's still four products too many when I don't use them!
Pixi by Petra
This is the least favourite of the three. It's slightly tinted but doesn't seem to have even a smidge of coverage. My main concern which would lead me to reach for a primer would be for when foundations sink into my pores, leaving that orange peel, dimpled effect. This doesn't rectify that problem so it's not up too much in my opinion. I chose this as one of the products to finish up in my 20/20 Vision Project - so that's the plan. I'd really rather just de-clutter it, but now I feel committed to finishing it off.
Emma Hardie
Amazing Face Protect & Prime with added SPF
Billed as a 'Skin protecting cream with added primer for a soft focus luminous complexion'. As it's reasonably light, I'm able to wear it instead of moisturiser to avoid that suffocating feeling of too many creams. It has a nice light-diffusing formula which adds extra glow and luminosity to your skin. The biggest advantage is that it contains 30 SPF, which I'm happy to wear in the winter.
With the signature Emma Hardie scent, this is an enjoyable cream to wear, but I wouldn't rely on it solely as a primer.
Becca
First Light Priming Filter
Out of the three deluxe samples I have, this is my favourite. But not as a primer! This gives my skin a gorgeous luminous finish but unfortunately doesn't really do the job as a primer.
At just 6ml, it shouldn't take too long to finish off.
E.L.F - Setting Spray
This had some great reviews, but I don't think it made my makeup last any longer. If anything, I didn't really enjoy misting my face with this after putting on my makeup - it felt like I was in more danger of washing it all off again.
Lesson Learned
Just because everyone else does it, doesn't mean I have to!
I won't be buying any more primers or setting sprays after I've used these up. To me, they're just one layer too far in the morning.
Stick with a good foundation that doesn't need a primer or need 'holding in place' with a setting spray. It can be done!
